MEMORY SQUARE

So, 2020 eh? A solid gold, turbo charged disaster. And in Aberdeen (the city where I live) the previous few years were hardly a bath of sprinkles either. As the year went from bad to worse I resolved to try and celebrate our city in my work for the first time.

The result is my new luxury silk scarf collection: MEMORY SQUARE. Memory Square is an imaginary Aberdonian address filled with old friends and happy times. Each of the 3 designs in the collection celebrates a beloved local landmark, immortalised on exquisite silk. One of the landmarks has recently reopened after vast rejuvination, the second is a city stalwart, always there when we need it, and the third is in a state of heartbreaking yet optimistic disrepair.

When it came to naming the designs I took inspiration from Rosemount Viaduct’s grand trio of civic buildings, known locally as EDUCATION (The Central Library), SALVATION (St. Mark’s Church) and DAMNATION (His Majesty’s Theatre). I thought I’d (loosely) follow that old naming convention. Therefore:

  • No.1 Memory Square is called CURATION and is my celebration of the Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museum.

  • No.2 Memory Square is called CULTIVATION and illustrates the green-fingered glory of Duthie Park.

  • No.3 Memory Square is called IMMERSION and depicts the Bon Accord Baths (£10 of every IMMERSION scarf bought in my webshop will be donated to Bon Accord Heritage, a charity raising funds to stabilise the building.)
